For over five decades she has performed heat load calculations\, residential energy diagnostics\, solar and alternate energy design\, energy conservation instruction\, contracting\, and consulting. As a Certified Building Analyst and Envelope Specialist\, Sharla assisted hundreds of homeowners with energy retrofit improvement analysis and design. As a Certified Home Energy Rater\, Sharla and her team provide testing\, certification\, and program compliance services for national energy and environmental programs such as ENERGYSTAR\, NAHB Green Build\, US Green Building Council’s LEED® for Homes Program and Federal Energy Tax Credits. Sharla and her company have supported several hundred builders with their Green Building goals.

Roles may include property managers\, leasing management companies\, facility managers\, building owners\, etc \n\n\n\n \n  \nMeet Your Presenters\n Mary English\, Program Manager\, Building Performance\nPrior to joining MEC in 2021\, Mary worked in the sustainable built environment industry conducting energy assessments\, testing\, consultation\, and overall experience in the field of building performance in both the residential and commercial sectors. \nMary founded Small Step Energy Solutions LLC which became a leading home energy assessment provider\, as well as a building consultant for sustainable new buildings and homes. During this time\, Small Step worked with municipalities – including the Kansas City\, MO codes department – to review and update building energy codes. She also worked closely with area developers to create sustainable developments and multi-family housing based on equity goals. Mary then moved into commercial-business sustainability\, helping start-up businesses in passive house panel construction; energy benchmarking; and efficiency upgrades in commercial HVAC systems. She currently serves on the Programs Committee for the USGBC Central Plains Community; and the Equity Committee for Climate Action Kansas City. \n  \nBrittanie Giroux\, Building Performance Associate\nBrittanie joined MEC as an AmeriCorps VISTA member in October of 2020. She came to MEC after completing a previous AmeriCorps service year in the City of Evanston\, IL’s Office of Sustainability where she led climate education initiatives and was involved in energy and waste franchise agreement processes. \nIn October of 2021\, Brittanie came on board full time as MEC’s Building Performance Associate. In this role\, she manages the Healthy Housing Taskforce\, co-manages the Energy and Water Benchmarking program\, creates social content and newsletters\, and conducts community outreach and events. Brittanie received her Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies from Vanderbilt University.

The ceremony will begin at 5:30 p.m. on August 11th at 500 Main Street. \nThe ribbon-cutting ceremony will mark the beginning of multiple charging station installations throughout the town. For Osawatomie\, sustainability initiatives made possible by this grant are just the beginning for their town. City Manager Mike Scanlon says\, “It’s nice to be at the front-end of rural economic development regarding EV chargers and vehicles. With the recent announcement of the Panasonic Battery Plant in De Soto\, I believe as a community; we are perfectly placed to leverage the benefits of these new technologies. SUMMARY:City of Osawatomie Community Forum for the Charging Forward Project and Flint Hills Trail State Park Achievements Celebration
DESCRIPTION:The City of Osawatomie\, KS will be hosting their first public Community Forum for its electric vehicle and charging station project\, “Charging Forward.”\nMembers of the public are encouraged to attend the forum\, which begins at 9am\, to learn more about the project and its goals\, and to ask questions one-on-one with City staff and representatives from MEC. \nFollowing the forum\, the City invites the public and guests to gather at the Mile Zero trailhead (located at 1400 South Street) to celebrate the achievements of the Flint Hills Trail State Park and enjoy appearances from community and trail partners. The program features representatives from the State of Kansas\, Federal Highway Administration\, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks\, and more who will remark on the Federal Highway Administration’s Environmental Excellence Award and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s RAISE grant award. \nAt 10:30am cyclists will depart for Ottawa\, Kansas and enjoy a complimentary lunch at Ottawa’s Legacy Square Park before returning to Osawatomie and ending the afternoon. \nMembers of the public are welcome to attend the day’s festivities beginning with the Community Forum at 9:00am at 545 Main Street. The “there and back again” trail ride is also open to all\, and is a self-paced ride. Riders are expected to support themselves and know their limits and abilities. Roles may include property managers\, leasing management companies\, facility managers\, building owners\, etc. \n\n\n\n April 26th – 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM \n\n\n\n\nRegister Today!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeet Your Presenters\n\n\n\nMary English\, Program Manager\, Building Performance\n\n\n\n\nPrior to joining MEC in 2021\, Mary worked in the sustainable built environment industry conducting energy assessments\, testing\, consultation\, and overall experience in the field of building performance in both the residential and commercial sectors. \n\n\n\nMary founded Small Step Energy Solutions LLC which became a leading home energy assessment provider\, as well as a building consultant for sustainable new buildings and homes. During this time\, Small Step worked with municipalities – including the Kansas City\, MO codes department – to review and update building energy codes. She also worked closely with area developers to create sustainable developments and multi-family housing based on equity goals. Mary then moved into commercial-business sustainability\, helping start-up businesses in passive house panel construction; energy benchmarking; and efficiency upgrades in commercial HVAC systems. She currently serves on the Programs Committee for the USGBC Central Plains Community; and the Equity Committee for Climate Action Kansas City. \n\n\n\n\nBrittanie Giroux\, Sr. Program Coordinator\, Building Performance\n\n\n\n\nBrittanie joined MEC as an AmeriCorps VISTA member in October of 2020. She came to MEC after completing a previous AmeriCorps service year in the City of Evanston\, IL’s Office of Sustainability where she led climate education initiatives and was involved in energy and waste franchise agreement processes. \n\n\n\nIn October of 2021\, Brittanie came on board full time as MEC’s Building Performance Associate. In this role\, she manages the Healthy Housing Taskforce\, co-manages the Energy and Water Benchmarking program\, creates social content and newsletters\, and conducts community outreach and events. Brittanie received her Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies from Vanderbilt University.

SUMMARY:Residential Energy Code Standards & Trends
DESCRIPTION:This fall the 2021 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) will go into effect in Kansas City\, MO. Join MEC for free\, multi-day training to prepare for the new requirements.\n \nThis course will provide an overview of the history of the IECC in the International Residential Code (IRC) and its multiple compliance paths – including the role of a HERS® Rater.  \nUsing 2021 IECC curriculum\, the instructor will provide a common understanding of the thermal envelope (including the impact of windows\, doors\, and skylights)\, what is included in insulation installation grading\, and advanced framing techniques. The instructor will also cover heating\, cooling\, and mechanical ventilation systems along with a discussion of the importance of duct tightness. Lighting\, appliances\, and clean energy contributions will also be discussed.  \nIncentives available through the Inflation Reduction Act will also be highlighted.\n \nTuesday\, July 25; 1-5pm: Part 1-Residential Energy Code Training (CE hours eligible) \nWednesday\, July 26; 1-5pm: Part 2- Residential Energy Code Training (CE hours eligible) \nNEW!
