Building on Our Legacy, Together for Tomorrow
In 2008, amidst a financial crisis that left countless families struggling, Metropolitan Energy Center (MEC) also faced the prospect of having to cut services. Resources were scarce, but our commitment to uplifting underserved communities remained steadfast.
Instead of despairing, we leaned into our mission, focusing on a new program to retrofit homes in neighborhoods hit hardest by rising costs—offering relief when it was needed most.
Maria, a single mother of three, felt that impact deeply. Her drafty home left her paying nearly half her income on energy bills, forcing tough choices between heating her home and providing for her children. At her breaking point, MEC stepped in. Our program helped seal her home, upgrade her furnace and reduce her energy bills by 40 percent.
For Maria, this wasn’t just a financial reprieve—it was a lifeline. “I didn’t just get a warmer house,” Maria told the energy contractor. “I got hope.”
Today, MEC continues to transform communities through clean energy access, sustainability education, and support for families like Maria’s, ensuring they can thrive.
This year, MEC delivered 100+ energy-saving kits to families and installed 15 EV chargers in underserved neighborhoods, making homes healthier and transportation cleaner. With your support, we’ve inspired brighter futures, advancing energy code updates, cutting emissions, and moving Kansas City closer to carbon neutrality.
