9 out of 10 breaths we take are indoors
Which would you choose: to live in a home you could afford, or one that is healthy for your family? Sadly, too many families are forced with that decision every day. The importance of a “healthy home” is shown time and again as scientific evidence continues to link substandard housing and health outcomes such as asthma, lead poisoning, and unintentional injuries. Creating healthier homes has the potential to save billions in health care costs and protect our most vulnerable population: children. Fortunately, there are some simple ways to help make your home healthier, safer, and more comfortable for you and your loved ones.
Healthy Homes KC
In partnership with Children’s Mercy’s Healthy Homes Program, this project is an initiative aimed at addressing a spectrum of housing-related health and safety concerns within the greater Kansas City area. It takes a holistic approach to tackle various pressing issues, including mold, poor indoor air quality, pests, carbon monoxide, safety hazards, and more.
Through the project, MEC is providing 8 Principles of a Healthy Home education to the below communities:
Community Members: A comprehensive 30-minute presentation can be tailored to suit neighborhood meetings or other community events. Attendees will gain valuable insights into identifying and rectifying common health hazards in homes. Snacks, beverages, and energy efficiency kits are provided.
Residential General or Subcontractors: During this 3.5-hour workshop, attendees will learn best practices and resources to ensure our region’s homes are safe and healthy. Workshop attendees will be added to the contractor list for Children’s Mercy’s Home Repair Program. All specialties are welcome from HVAC and home repair to painting and insulation. Snacks and beverages are provided.
