Metropolitan Energy Center
transforming energy use in America’s Heartland since 1983
A
for environmental, energy, and economic security in Kansas and Missouri.
Since 1998, we’ve helped organizations adopt clean alternative fuels to cut costs and reduce their carbon footprint, eliminating about 10 million gallons of petroleum in our region.
We help communities save on energy bills, promote healthier living environments, and go green by empowering folks to make their homes or businesses more energy efficient.
Community workshops, education, and advocacy are the heart of our organization through our Project Living Proof location and local events.
To create resource efficiency, environmental health, and economic vitality in the Kansas City region.
Transportation and electricity generation are the top sources of greenhouse gas emissions in the US. Metropolitan Energy Center is the only non-profit in the Heartland working to reduce those trends. MEC provides the resources, technical know-how, and education for businesses, governments, and the public who are seeking information on energy efficiency or alternative fuel options.
We forge community partnerships around renewable energy development, building efficiency, clean transportation options, and sustainability practices. Our specialized approach helps diverse organizations cut costs and improve environmental health in the ways that make sense for them. We empower local communities to act against climate change and harmful pollutants, as we help cities and businesses go green vehicle by vehicle and building by building. MEC strives to preserve the livability of our communities for generations to come.
We rely on our generous donors, members, and sponsors to sustain clean communities for future generations. You can become a member or sponsor to advance your organization’s alternative fuel and energy efficiency initiatives, or support our local efforts by clicking here to donate.

In 2012, MEC founded Electrify Heartland with a singular vision: to lay the groundwork for a zero-emission transportation future in the Kansas City region. We rallied a coalition of EV experts and policymakers to create the infrastructure and incentives necessary to prepare our area for an electrified future. The program, coupled with KCP&L’s Clean Charge Network, was a huge success: Kansas City is now the best EV ecosystem in the country.
This year, MEC recognized the need for the next wave of EV organizing in Kansas City. Thanks to the earlier efforts of Electrify Heartland, we have the right infrastructure, vision, and EV advocates in place. The time is ripe for widespread EV adoption in neighborhoods across Kansas City – and we called upon the coalition to serve as a new catalyst.
Electrify Heartland now seeks to address the contemporary barriers to widespread electrification. We hope to provide education and promote incentives to make EV’s more affordable for members of our communities. We seek to make infrastructure, electric cars, and electrified public transit more accessible in underserved neighborhoods. Ultimately, our goal is to make EV’s an accessible, widespread, and affordable option.
