What’s Next for Clean Energy in Kansas City
Metropolitan Energy Center (MEC), in collaboration with Growth Opportunities and local partners, will soon launch a transformative $18 million project aimed at expanding solar access to about 2,000 low-income homes in the Kansas City region.
Share the Sun is more than just a solar project—it’s an investment in our community’s future. By working with residents, local governments, and clean energy partners, we’re creating a foundation for long-term resiliency and affordability.
Here’s what the program will deliver:
Home Readiness: Inspect, qualify, and permit homes for solar
Partnerships: Work with installers, planners, and utilities
Job Training: Create workforce development opportunities in clean energy
Procurement: Secure and manage vendors for long-term success
MEC has been involved in previous solar projects that were successful in providing
affordable solar for residents of the KC metro area.
A community based program for solar energy that allowed homeowners, businesses and nonprofits to affordably invest in renewable energy systems. The program utilized volume discounts on installation services and resources so more participation led to greater affordability, and the high volume of interest in this program allowed the cheapest price tier of $2.55/watt to be reached. In total the program installed just over 700 kW of residential solar and 54 kW of battery storage.
